A tomato galette, more bees, Oliver B wisdom
I found some pie dough in the freezer and made a tomato galette for dinner last Sunday. I’ve recently started using a pastry mat to roll the dough (instead of my wood countertops) and I really like it.

The Bees settling in for the night on Monday 8:09 PM…
Tuesday night I stayed up past my bedtime watching this National Geographic video on bees. Dude, wait until you see the red-tailed mason bee (affectionately named “the broomstick bee”). There is also some tense footage of a hive in Japan fending off Murder Hornets!
On Wednesday I made a pot of Rancho Gordo Caballero beans. I let them soak for almost 24 hours until they looked completely hydrated, and then pressure cooked them in the Instant Pot (10 minutes with natural release) covered by 2-inches of water, with 1 tbsp kosher salt, a bay leaf, and a good pour of olive oil.
I used them and all the broth to make a pot of soup using stuff I already had—an onion, a fennel bulb, a stalk of celery, and three zucchini. Served with a hefty spoonful of parmesan and cracked black pepper.

Thursday I had a short teaching day and enjoyed the afternoon off. Aaron and I went for a walk, and then I took my son back to my studio to move and work on some lifting technique. We heated up an excellent frozen pizza from Good Luck Bread for dinner…
My go-to sunglasses are these ones from goodr. They are comfortable, pragmatic, affordable, and very Seattle. When I want to feel a little bit extra I’ve been wearing these Ray-Ban / A$AP Rocky Wayfarer Puffers that just delight me.
“Nonetheless, I tend to use the question as a chance to drive home what I’ve come to think of as a deeply important point: building a meaningful life is much less about discovering the right set of practices or habits than it is about cultivating the willingness to step up moment after moment and just do more of the things that matter, for the projects and people and causes you care about most…it’s a matter of coming back and back and back to the question of what you could do right now that would constitute living the way you aspire to live.
I think it’s much more straightforward and doable than the quest for the perfect set of techniques, the perfect environment, or the perfect system. That quest is endless, and will torment you forever. Whereas self-mastery – or presence of mind, or whatever you want to call it – can only ever happen now. You’re forgiven all the times you failed in the past, and needn’t worry about the times you might fail in future. You just need to give it a shot now, accepting that it’ll probably make you feel a bit queasy: to choose the healthy option, close the social media app, write another hundred words, really listen to the other person, and so on. As soon as you try, you’ve succeeded – and along comes a fresh moment in which to try again.”
Enjoy the weekend. xxK
